Testing UV-C Lights

How to test UV-C lights to see if they're real or fake. Be careful, there are a lot of fakes out there!

TEXT of VIDEO

One of the ways to disinfect surfaces, is to shine a UV-C light on them. At WeBeFit we started using them a while ago as an added layer of cleaning overnight.

Then the pandemic hit. When we went to order additional lamps, we discovered dozens of models from companies we had never heard of. Many were a newer design using LED technology.

So we ordered a couple.

The problem started, when we tested how effective the new lamps were.

We use a device called a Luminometer to test how clean or dirty surfaces are. Swabs of surfaces before and after using the new disinfecting lights, were virtually identical. Some of our new lights weren't killing anything.

After some searching, we found a company called American Ultraviolet. They make these single-use cards called dosimeter cards. When they're exposed to UV-C light, they change color, indicating how much of a dose they've received.

So we tested our older lamps and filmed them using a time-lapse video. After 30 minutes, you can see how the center of the card changed from the unexposed yellow, to pink. The cards clearly show they've been exposed to UV-C light.

Then we exposed dosimeter cards to these newer LED lamps. After 30 minutes, there was absolutely no change in the yellow center. There was NO UV-C light coming out of these lamps. These are FAKE UV-C lamps. They're good for making things glow, but worthless for sanitizing.

The quickest option for testing lamps are these QuantaDose™ UV/UVC INTENSITY CARDs. You simply move the card where the light is shining and you'll see a bright UVC appear. Look closely at the fake UVC lamp, nothing. Now back at the real one and the UVC is clearly visible.

If you plan on using UV-C lamps for disinfecting, you need to verify they're real. We've posted information on three ways you can validate them. Just visit WeBeFit.com and click on the link that says Cleaner Spaces now. That's where we share all our cleaning tips and testing procedures for free.

TESTING PRODUCTS MENTIONED IN VIDEO

We do not get commission or take any payments for products we recommend. These are the three options we mention in this video and where you can get them. There may be other products available, but we can only speak for the ones we actually have used and verified ourselves.

A Disibio : What brands do you recommend?
KLAYRECFB : So where do we buy the cards ?
QuantaDose UV-C Test Card : Thank you for this important video! Great job of showing ALL THREE of the best (proven) ways to confirm the UVC light disinfection process - each providing different types of test where each of them provide very important and unique analytical data from a referenced point of calibration!

Everyone needs to be aware that many sellers on mainstream sites are selling meaningless (no point of calibration) fake UVC test cards to promote their fake UVC lights. For everyone's safety I would stick to only the three proven ways used by WeBeFit in this video, a company that has really done its homework to protect you while keeping you fit! Only wish this place was near me! Here is a detail video on QuantaDose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3YqJROppgA

The test they do are great, but WeBeFit has really become a roll-model for businesses everywhere! They have gone above and beyond, I recommend you visit their website to see what I'm talking about!
Robert Zeman : Great job thanks for the info.
teslacoiler : Quick test for UVC lamps.
place your arm near the bulb and expose your skin for about 5 seconds (VERY IMPORTANT: ALWAYS PROTECT THE EYES!), than switch off the bulb and sniff the exposed skin.
If the bulb is real, the exposed skin should have a burning smell.
Do not do this test many times because UVC exposures are dangerous (the burning is real... but just limited to a very thin layer of skin because of the very short exposure time!).
Please note that almost 50% of portable LED disinfectors and almost all of UVC LED lamps are FAKE but devices equipped with transparent mercury vapor discharge tube are usually genuine (and also, cheap-crappy UVC devices equipped with mercury vapors discharge tubes are almost always more powerful and better than super-expensive and well designed disinfectors equipped with genuine UVC LEDs)

Experimenting with UV Resin and a DIY UV Lamp

I'm starting to work more with resin projects using 2-part resin and wanted to see if I could use my homemade UV exposure lamp, which I had already built for cyanotype printing, to cure UV resin. It works!

This video is a follow up to the UV lamp I first published in 2018.

Becky Stern : Cool, thanks for sharing! ☀️
Brendan Lagather : Cool video! Very cool tip regarding the rice.
charlotte dodd : The reason its taking that long for the smallest bits of UV resin is because your strip lights of UV are not strong enough. Most uv resin needs atleast 36 watts of UV light to cure quickly and properly. My CND nail lamp with 36 watts would cure a small dot like that in about 30 seconds, where as my 6 watt UV flash light would take 6 minutes.
matt p : How can the light cure what it cannot shine on....you need real epoxy.
audreyObscura : Thanks for watching! I'm excited to keep playing with this adhesive for projects - it's definitely kind of magical to let it 'cook' and come back to see that the pieces don't need a lot of finish work.

Calli : What about the faulty lamp?! Mine doesnt have an USB port either. I cannot connect it to the power source..
Billy Reynolds : WTF, I wouldn't trust that cheapass protector, probably from AliBaba..I mean Express.
1:17 That's not how you're supposed to apply LOCA either :O You should put it in the middle and let the weight of the screen spread it.
Holy crap, it's a LOCA protector but it doesn't cover the whole face? That will come off in a couple of weeks, if it doesn't end up spiderwebbing all over the place cos someone caught the top end with a sleeve or something. It doesn't even look like it's been designed for that phone?
Both Tzy : Are you Cambodian or their nationality?
Sim Weiliang William : Why after I apply uv gel screen private protector I cannot use fingerprints to unlock
Abhishek Gowda : This is seles marketing... Don't be excited China
